Mobile internet is starting to take over

The Internet is changing fast – we don’t need to tell you that! You can now access the wonderful World Wide Web from more devices than we can name; laptops, tablets, smartphones, gaming devices, watches and even glasses, so it’s a no-brainer to ensure your site it optimised for mobile use – isn’t it?

According to a Search Engine Land report, 15% of all Internet traffic comes from mobile devices. In some categories it is much higher. Companies like ‘yelp,’ which helps users search for local businesses, have reported that 55% of all searches are from mobile devices. These numbers vary by industry, but it’s safe to say mobile is important for your business. So, if you are a Marketing Manager struggling to convince those who hold the purse strings that they need to invest, have no fear. We have compiled some information to help you build a solid case.

We behave differently on the go, so should your website.

We interact with websites differently when we’re on the go. Some companies think that getting their site to fit on the smaller screen of a mobile device is enough. It looks the part, but in the long run that doesn’t really help! On the go you’re looking for quick answers, short cuts and info in a nutshell. Think of it like food. When you’re on the go you want a snack – something quick to grab, easy to eat and satisfying. A roast dinner wrapped up in a cereal bar wrapper will just cause a whole lot of mess!

The other option is to make an entirely different HTML website that is a modified version of your site only served to mobile and tablet users. This ‘mobile responsive’ site is the satisfying snack version that gives busy users exactly what they want, on the go. Of course, the trimmings of your site are important, but your customers can enjoy them at leisure as they enjoy their real roast dinner later!

Improved User Experience

We’ve all been there; a friend sends us a link via text or email, which we eagerly click on. Excitement leads to frustration when we’re faced with a load of jumbled jargon on our phone. This kills any chance you have of converting that visitor into a customer. Some reports show that 60% of mobile users in the past 12 months have abandoned a page, because the content just wouldn’t display properly on their mobile device.

Increased Average Time on Site

Time is precious, especially online. Your website has a very limited amount of time to capture a visitor’s attention. That window of opportunity is even shorter on mobile devices. If you create a site that’s easy to navigate with content written in mobile friendly format, you increase the chance of converting visitors into customers! Which is what it’s all about, after all!

Faster Website Load Speed

If time is off the essence, then so is speed! The two go hand-in-hand. A normal website that isn’t mobile optimized will render very slowly on your mobile device or, in worse case scenarios, it may not load at all. A mobile ready website should be coded to load quickly on mobile devices. To give the argument a little bit of context, studies show mobile website users will abandon a page if they have to wait more than just 6-10 seconds for it to load. That’s right, you have less than 10 seconds to capture their attention!

Improved Mobile SEO

We are all slaves to Google whether we like it or not. If Google wants it, we do it and the guys at the top recommend webmasters build their sites so they are mobile responsive. If that isn’t an option, they prefer your business to make a separate HTML website to serve to mobile users. This will help with your Google rankings, which we all know helps boost sales!

Gain Competitive Advantage

You see what sort of website your competition are using with a little bit of research on your own phone. But, even if they don’t appear to have mobile ready sites, it’s all the more reason to get cracking on yours. It’s a jungle out there and if your competitors haven’t got a mobile ready site at the moment, chances are they are working on one.
