119 minutes a day

It’s a wonderful mobile life
Perhaps it won’t come as a surprise to you that we’re actually spending more time these days on our smart phones and tablets than ever.
According to research from O2 we spend 119 minutes a day – that’s 724 hours a year – making calls, browsing the internet, texting and listening to music on our phone. Those stats are backed up by figures from the Oxford Internet Survey, which suggest that people spend almost 1,000 hours a year online. More than 70 hours of that is spent on the social networking site Facebook, which itself has a billion mobile users! Combining TV, computer, smart phone and tablet use, we spend an average of nine hours a day staring at screens, shockingly more than some people actually sleep!
The future’s mobile
And it looks like technology will be getting even more mobile. Seven in 10 people in the UK now own a smart phone. Generation Y – those aged around 25 to 30 – are the most likely to own one. But Generation Z – those aged 16 to 24 – follow closely with 85 per cent smartphone ownership. However, it’s not just the ‘younger’ generations that are happy on their apps. More than half 54 to 65-year olds, 54 per cent, now own a smartphone and those figures are only heading in one direction.
The future is undoubtedly mobile and with the innovation of Google Glass soon you won’t even need to pick up a your phone. You’ll be able to manage everything through voice control and a tiny device on a pair of specs.
Cutting through the noise
Technology is well and truly here to stay and whilst we can debate it’s merits or dangers until our iphone batteries wear out, there are very few of us who’d return to a world where you can’t check the train times on the move, or call the kids to wish them goodnight from the other side of the world.
However, as businesses we need to recognise that people consume information very differently on mobile devices. They skim-read rather than taking in lots of content, are more likely to get distracted by images and video and are much, much more likely to tune out if they can’t get what they need quickly.
We understand this at ifour and rather than squeezing your existing site into a mobile or tablet format that doesn’t really fit, we actually take the time to understand the specific user journey and tailor the response accordingly. There is nothing worse than waiting for a large image or unnecessary content to download, slowing your experience and wearing your patience thin. In today's world we expect instant results at the touch of a button.
