Root 1066

Commissioned by Hastings Council and supported by Arts Council England, the Root 1066 International Festival of contemporary arts is inspired by the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. The festival is a multi-artform series of events that offers audiences new perspectives on the legacy of one of the most famous dates in history. The festival features work from some of the best international contemporary artists and taps into the creative energy of one of the most exciting parts of the country. Root 1066 will offer spectacular outdoor events, amazing performances and exhibitions and exciting participatory projects across '1066 Country'.

Our brief was to use the festival brand guidelines as we developed the website to ensure that it bore a strong ‘family resemblance' to the printed festival programme, which was also still in production. Design had to simultaneously appeal to connoisseurs of contemporary art and also engage and be accessible to a more general audience. Key to the build, was simple navigation and filtering to enable least amount of clicks to get to the information needed. A map to show the location of events was another request along with an area to feature sponsors.
